Torn Paper Shadows of the Ramayana

Many of the Shadow Puppetry traditions of South India trace their roots to Maharashtra. So I was extra excited when Kiski Kahani (also on FB) brought me out to the Yashwantrao Chavan School in Pune, to put on a 2 day Shadow Theatre and Ramayana workshop for the youth.

Like most of my basic shadow theatre workshops, we begin with ripped paper shadow puppets, the add windows and colored cellophane. The students created such beautiful worlds from the shadows of torn paper.

Then the students broke up into small groups and worked on retelling specific episodes from the Epic. I let them use the materials and shadow masks that were developed this year by Shadow Liberation for our latest production Ramayana Remix.

Bangalore Theatre League

Bangalore Theatre League brought college theatre groups from around the city to Alliance Francaise De Bangalore to share short plays, build relationships and receive encouragement from a panel of theatre professionals. I was happy to encourage the young arts, and impressed with the quality of the performances. With a disproportionate number of engineering students, these students are clearly putting work to put up plays while cramming for exams. A successful first event from TEA Arts.
